If you have a computer, an internet connection and a few minutes of time, you can make some money online. Yes, it is that easy – but there’s a catch.

The hard part – and this is what other articles don’t tell you – the hard part is that what you’ll make each time is probably either going to be very little, or very infrequent.

Let me give you an example. Do you want to make $10 right now? Well, one way is to sign up with an online casino. Most will give an incentive for first-time members, usually in the region of $20. I 1. The next time you order checks have only your
initials (instead of first name) and last name put on
them. If someone takes your checkbook, they will not
know if you sign your checks with just your initials or
your first name, but your bank will know how you sign
your checks.

2. Do not sign the back of your credit cards.
Instead, put “PHOTO ID REQUIRED.”

3. When you are writing checks to pay on your credit
card accounts, DO NOT put the complete account number
on the “For” line. Instead, just put the last four
numbers. The credit card company knows the rest of the
number, and anyone who might be handling your check as
it passes through all the check-processing channels
will not have access to it.

4. Put your work phone # on your checks instead of your
home phone. If you have a PO Box, use that instead of
your home address. If you do not have a PO Box, use
your work address. Never have your SS# printed on your
checks, (DUH!). You can add it if it is necessary.
However, if you have it printed, anyone can get it.

5. Place the contents of your wallet on a photocopy
machine. Do both sides of each license, credit card,
etc. You will know what you had in your wallet and all
of the account numbers and phone numbers to call and
cancel. Keep the photocopy in a safe place. Also carry
a photocopy of your passport when traveling either here
or abroad. We have all heard horror stories about fraud
that is committed on us in stealing a name, address,
Social Security number, credit cards.

6. When you check out of a hotel that uses cards for
keys (and they all seem to do that now), do not turn
the “keys” in. Take them with you and destroy them.
Those little cards have on them all of the information
you gave the hotel, including address and credit card
numbers and expiration dates. Someone with a card
reader, or employee of the hotel, can access all that
information with no problem whatsoever.

Unfortunately,  an attorney friend of mine has first hand
knowledge because his wallet was stolen last month.
Within a week, the thieve(s) ordered an expensive
monthly cell phone package, applied for a VISA credit
card, had a credit line approved to buy a Gateway
computer and received a PIN number from DMV to change
his driving record information online. Here is some
critical information to limit the damage in case this
happens to you or someone you know:

1. We have been told we should cancel our credit cards
immediately. The key is having the toll free numbers
and your card numbers handy so you know whom to call.
Keep those where you can find them.

2. File a police report immediately in the jurisdiction
where your credit cards, etc., were stolen. This proves
to credit providers you were diligent, and this is a
first step toward an investigation (if there ever is
one). However, here is what is perhaps most important
of all (I never even thought to do this.)

3. Call the three national credit reporting
organizations immediately to place a fraud alert on
your name and Social Security number. I had never heard
of doing that until advised by a bank that called to
tell me an application for credit was made over the
Internet in my name. The alert means any company that
checks your credit knows your information was stolen,
and they have to contact you by phone to authorize new
credit. By the time I was advised to do this, almost
two weeks after the theft, all the damage had been
done. There are records of all the credit checks
initiated by the thieves’ purchases, none of which I
knew about before placing the alert. Since then, no
additional damage has been done, and the thieves threw
my wallet away this weekend (someone turned it in). It
seems to have stopped them dead in their tracks.

One of the first things successful people realize is the old adage, “if it is to be, it is up to me.” This doesn’t mean that you do it all alone. It simply means that you take responsibility for your life and your career.

Too many people today look at opportunity and figure it is up to someone else to make sure they get it. They look at financial security and hope that the government will make sure they live safely in retirement or in case of disability. They wait and wait, figuring that it is up to someone else. And then the wait is over, and it is too late to do anything. Their life is over and they are filled with regret.

This isn’t true for you however. You know that you must take responsibility for your life. It is up to you.

The fact is that nobody else is going to do it for you, you must do it yourself.

Now, some people may say, “Jim, that’s a lot of responsibility.” Friends, that is the best news you can ever hear. You get to choose your life. Hundreds of millions of people all around this world would give anything to live in the situation you do just for the chance to have the opportunity to take control of their destiny. “It is up to you” is a great blessing!

4. You experience the joy of self-determination. There is no greater pride than knowing you set your mind on something and accomplished it. Those who live with a victim mentality never get to experience the joy of accomplishment because they are always waiting for someone else to come to the rescue. Those who take responsibility get to live the joy of seeing a job well done.

Let me ask you a question: Where will you be in 5 years? 10 years? Or 25 years? Do you know? DO you have an idea? Have you ever dreamed about it or set a goal for it? Are you willing to take responsibility and recognize that, “It is up to you?”

You will be wherever you decide to be in those timeframes. You decide. It is up to you.

And that is very exciting!

Was it your first name and the last three digits of your street address? Your pet’s name when you were a child? Your mother’s maiden name spelled backwards?

Ugh.

Security experts tell you to come up with ’strong’ passwords and to not repeat them. That’s great advice, but sometimes it’s impractical — and hard as heck to remember.

Well, here are some other common password problems. . . and some advice on how to solve them:

* You use the same password for all of the sites you
log into.

Uh Oh. Using the same password opens up your whole online life — from your reunion website to your shopping cart to your bank account — the moment someone discovers just one of your passwords. Never do this. It’s a very quick path to big trouble.

* You log into dozens of websites a day, and spend upwards
of 30 minutes a day on login screens.

This is a real problem for me, too. I log into websites well over 80 to 90 times a day — and some sites I log into several times a day. It’s a real time waster. One solution is to try to keep multiple browser windows open with your logged-in sites, but many websites expire automatically so you can’t do this very long.

* You work at Internet Cafe’s and other public WiFi
hotspots.

Be careful. Never let anyone watch you log-in. . .
especially at a public place. If you ever log-in in a public place, watch the people who are watching you log-in. They may be watching you type, and recording your usernames and passwords as you type them.

It’s not a password, but your credit card information is just as spy-able.

* Your passwords are weak.

Do you use plain words, your first name, the digits 1234, the same number over and over again, numbers from your address, or other easily-knowable or easily guessable words and numbers in your passwords? It’s not a problem, until you get hacked just once.

Then you feel incredibly vulnerable, like nothing is secret any more.
